Love

Well, today is Valentine's Day, a day that people express their love for each other through lots of chocolates, cards, and roses. I have nothing against this day at all, in fact, I find it rather sweet, but I do feel like too many people get caught up in the catchy phrases of the Hallmark cards and the stuffed pink bears to be able to really focus on what true love is. This day reminds me how easily love can be confused with infatuation and affection; people too easily fall into believing that love is based on a feeling rather than an action.
"But God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
 -Romans 5:8
I read this verse this morning and it reminded me how God has shown us the purest and most self-sacrificing love. He knew we would deny Him, fail Him, and fall away from Him at times, but He still willingly died in our place anyway. His love for us is perfect and even though we let Him down often, His love for us will never change.
God tells us how we should love one another. These verses are very common and many people have heard them said over and over, but they are a good reminder to all of us about what true love looks like. "Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things. Love never fails. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away."
-1 Corinthians 13:4-8
Love is not about fulfilling our own desires, but serving others. It's not about what we want, but what we can give. It's not a feeling, but an action to show that we care for someone beyond our self. True love doesn't give up when circumstances become tough, instead it perseveres. It rejoices in the truth and holds onto hope.

As we continue going about our lives, may we remember this example of true love and strive to love those around us with these standards. God sent His only son to die because He loves us so much. As we seek God's purpose for our lives, may we have softened hearts so God can transform us and renew our spirits. May we also experience God's true love so that we can love others because He first loved us.
